Casey Connor (Elijah Wood)
Casey is a loner at school, having little/no friends that he talks to. He's a photographer for the school newspaper, and during the time he's spent with Delilah has developed a crush on her - he even has a photo of her in his bedroom. Underneath the geeky exterior he's strong willed and brave and can be depended on.

Delilah Profitt (Jordana Brewster)
Popular, head cheerleader, news reporter. Delilah knows what she wants and tries as hard as she can to get it. She doesn't really have time for other people's problems, and seems self absorbed at times. She and Stan are dating at the beginning of the film, and she knows how to use Casey's crush on her to an advantage.

Marybeth Louise Hutchinson (Laura Harris)
The new girl in school and she tries to be friends with everyone, but preferring to talk to the less popular people such as Zeke and Stokely.

Stan Rosado (Shawn Hatosy)
Stan is the best football player at Herrinton High - until he decides to quit and to try harder at his schoolwork. He's not just a typical jock, though he does appear as though he might be one at first glance. He realises that he wants more out of life and that he should try something he's not so good at.

Stokely 'Stokes' Mitchell (Clea DuVall)
Another loner, Stokely would rather be left alone than be tanted by the more popular pupils in school, and so she lets everyone believe that she's a lesbian. She has watched Stan from afar for years and developed a crush on him, though she thinks it is unrequited.

Zeke Tyler (Josh Hartnett)
At first glance, Zeke appears a loser. He's a drug dealer, selling his home made "scat" to the pupils of the school. However, Zeke is a lot more intelligent than he first seems, despite having to repeat his senior year and is a quick thinker which helps the students get out of more than one tricky situation.
